The 5-Minute Read

When we think about God protecting us, we often imagine it as vast, powerful, and distant — a fortress with thick walls, a shield that keeps danger far away. We're grateful for the safety, but it can feel cold, like being secured in an empty bunker while the battle rages outside — safe, but completely alone.

But the text doesn't say we abide in a fortress. It says we abide *under the shadow* of the Almighty. And that changes everything, because a shadow requires proximity. There's a massive difference between being in the same room as someone and being close enough to feel their body heat. You cannot be in someone's shadow from a mile away, or even from across the street.

To be in the shadow, you must be close.

We often look for a mechanical system of protection — a guarantee that nothing will go wrong. But we were never meant to be protected by a system. The secret place is the intimate, immediate presence of the Divine Romance. Picture a small child standing directly against their father's leg as a stranger approaches, entirely engulfed in the father's shadow. The safety doesn't come from a wall. It comes from the physical, immediate presence of the one casting it. You are not just protected from a distance. You are held, intimately and closely, right now.

I've seen how hard it can be for people to accept this kind of closeness, and I've felt it myself. When I first tried to lean into this shadow, I realised I was comfortable with God's power, but not so familiar with His proximity. Old patterns of shame tell us to keep a safe distance from YHWH — we want the protection, but not the intimacy, because intimacy requires being fully seen. If you feel a subtle urge to pull back right now, let it be there. Don't rush to hide in your head to avoid the actual feeling of being close. Just notice the fear of intimacy, and let it begin to dissolve against the sheer warmth of His covenant lovingkindness.

The shadow is safe.

You don't have to hide here.

5-Minute Practice

Find a seat where you can lean back and stay for five minutes. Set a timer if you'd rather not think about the time.

Audio Practice Meditation Script

Think about what it actually takes to be in someone's shadow. You can't be in a shadow from a mile away — you have to be close. Abiding under the shadow of the Almighty is a statement of extreme proximity. The secret place isn't a cold, empty bunker where you're safely hidden but completely alone. It's a place of immediate, intimate presence — the protective stance of a Father leaning over you.

Sit somewhere you can lean back slightly, letting the chair or wall take some of your weight — you don't have to hold yourself up for this one. Let your hands open on your lap. Close your eyes, and let your shoulders drop away from your ears.

Picture the space right next to you. Recognise that to be in the shadow, He must be standing right beside you — not somewhere far off, but here. Lean back slightly. Lean into the shadow. Slow your breathing, and let yourself feel the warmth of that proximity. If your body feels rigid or wants to keep a polite distance, notice that too, without judgment, and lean in anyway. You don't have to hide here. If the urge to pull back returns — a stiffening, a polite retreat — notice it without shame, and lean in again anyway. You are not alone in this space. You are held, closely, right now.

Let your eyes open in your own time.

Tomorrow we will look at the uncontested power that casts this shadow. Come back when you're ready.
